The said infrastructure aims to re-establish face-to-face classes after the devastating earthquake.
On Tuesday, July 21, First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos and several officials from the Department of Education’s (DepEd) inspected the prefabricated learning continuity spaces (LCS) set up at Romana C. Acharon Central Elementary School.
Together, they checked the newly constructed modular structures, which had made use of off-site manufacturing technology to shorten the typical construction time to a quick two-week on-site assembly.
The First Lady also interacted with kindergarten and grade 1 students through a storybook reading session, which showcases the return to a safe learning environment.
These modular learning spaces also come with chairs and school supplies to ensure immediate use upon deployment.
These structures have been constructed after the Magnitude 7.8 quake in Sarangani last June left severe cracks in the concrete beams, columns, and walls of two buildings, disrupting the flow of learning fror 4,460 students enrolled in the said school.
To avert a severe classroom shortage, the DepEd having expedited the construction of a one-story, five-room modular LCS facility funded under the fiscal year 2026 Basic Education Facilities Fund (BEF).
This visit also follows the earlier inspection by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Education Secretary Sonny Angara to review the progress of emergency infrastructure last June 10.
In a statement, Angara stressed the importance of quickly returning to normalcy in schools after any disaster.
“Tugon natin sa hamong ito ang mabilisang aksyon at makabagong solusyon tulad ng LCS para masigurong ligtas silang makabalik sa mga silid-aralan sa lalong madaling panahon,” said Angara, who emphasized the President’s directive that education must not be interrupted.
The Learning Continuity Spaces (LCS), according to the Department of Education, serve as a rapid and disaster-resilient solution to classroom shortages and times of emergency.
These structures were designed by the DepEd and prefabricated and are constructed off-site to ensure their quick erection inside schools.
The program features two main models: the Upgraded Temporary Learning Space and the Prefabricated Learning Continuity Space.
The latter is purposely engineered as a permanent and long-term infrastructure, using innovative construction methods to better address the backlog of classrooms compared to conventional construction methods.
President Marcos and Secretary Angara first inspected the specialized manufacturing facility that produces these modular designs in March 2026 during a site visit to Mariveles, Bataan.
As of July 16, 2026, the DepEd has completed the construction of 50 LCS units in the Ilocos Region, Central Luzon, CALABARZON, Central Visayas, Davao Region, and CARAGA.
In addition, an additional 828 units are currently undergoing various stages of procurement and construction nationwide.
