On Tuesday, June 23, streaming giant Netflix announced that it has greenlit a new medical series entitled First Doctor.
Centered on a pediatric surgery unit on the verge of closure, and the people who battle through yet another crisis to protect the most fragile lives, the drama features a powerhouse cast.
Leading the ensemble is actress Jung Ryeo-Won, who is known for My Name Is Kim Samsoon and Wok of Love, who will portray the lead fenale character Heo Ji-wan.
She is described to be a “brilliant but blunt pediatric surgeon labeled ‘the hospital’s ultimate troublemaker’ due to her uncompromising personality.”
However, after an unexpected incident, she is forced to return to Yeonhwa University Hospital (YHUH), where she will vow to protect the failing department and its young patients.
However, Ha Yoon-kyung’s (known for Extraordinary Woo and Hospital Playlist Season 2) character Ki Eun-gyeol will always clash with Ji-wan, as Eun-gyeol is regarded as a “confident, sharp-witted third-year resident whose raw talent and rebellious streak set the stage for a high-friction mentor-mentee relationship.”
Meanwhile, seasoned actor Bek Hyun-Jin (of Taxi Driver and The Devil Judge) will play the Head of Surgery Son Sang-baek, while Kim Jong-Soo will do the role of Vice Director Lee Chang-gon, which is said to be bringing “institutional weight and political tension to the narrative.”
Furthermore, “The series will explore the dynamic that unfolds between these two influential hospital figures and the often-isolated Heo Ji-wan.”
Fresh from Teach You A Lesson, Kim Moo-Yul returns to Netflix for the role of Bae Su-wol in the medical series, which is said to be “a charming anesthesiology professor and longtime confidant to Ji-wan.”
Netflix noted, “Beyond medical tropes, the series will focus on an intense systemic crisis and profound human connection, delivering a deeply moving look at the people who refuse to give up on saving lives.“
The series marks the reunion of director Hong Jong-Chan and Baeksang Award-winning writer Kim Min-Suk, the creative duo behind the critically acclaimed hit Juvenile Justice.
“Backed by Kim Min-Suk’s sharp writing and Hong Jong-Chan’s grounded direction, First Doctor is poised to become Netflix’s next standout series,” the platform continued, with other details including the streaming date yet to be announced.
