It is the 34th city to be designated such title in the country.
Last May 26, President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. officially proclaimed Naga City in the process of province of Camarines Sur as a highly-urbanized city (HUC).
According to Proclamation No. 1267, Naga City has a population of 210, 545 as certified by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) and an income of PHP298.53 million based on the 1991 constant prices, as certified by the Department of Finance-Bureau of Local Government Finance.
Both were the minimum requirements prescribed under Section 452 of Republic Act No. 7610 or the “Local Government Code of 1991” for a city to be declared an HUC, thereby making Naga City the 34th in the country to be designated such classification.
It is significant milestone for the major Bicol hub renowned for its participatory governance, as the Sangguniang Panlungsod of the City of Naga, through Resolution No. 2026-078, was the one who requested for the designation.
The HUC classification is expected to take effect only upon ratification in a plebiscite by the qualified voters therein, as provided for in Section 453 of RA No. 7160, and must take place within 120 days.
The proclamation coincided with the 68th birth anniversary of Mayor Leni’s late husband and former Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jesse Robredo, who also served as the city’s mayor in 1998 and again from 2001 to 2010.
