Alex Eala wins first singles, doubles matches in Madrid

Bouncing back after the slow start to her clay season.

On Wednesday (April 22), Filipina tennis sensation Alex Eala competed in the first round of the singles division of the Madrid Open in Spain.

In the said match, she took on Russian veteran player Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, whom she had to keep toe-to-toe with throughout the course of the competition.

Eventually, the 20-year-old, who had just climbed to world number 44 in the WTA index, was able to finish it off with a victory in just two sets, with the final scoreboard seeing 6-3, 6-3.

This win earned Eala a spot in the next stage of the singles competition, the round of 64, where she is expected to play opposite Belgian player Elise Mertens.

In an Instagram post, Alex wrote in Spanish: “Step one done,” with a salute emoji at the end.

And she was just indeed getting started as on Thursday, April 23 (Manila time), she returned to the court for the doubles category, where she teamed up with Turkish player Zeynep Sönmez.

The duo battled it out against Taiwanese Chan Hao-ching and Hungarian Fanny Stollár.

Alex and Zeynep surely dominated, as their opponents were unable to take a winning set as they closed it in just two sets, 6-2, 6-2. This earned them a berth in the Round of 16, which happens this weekend.
