Nesthy Petecio clinches several records after winning silver at Tokyo 2020

Petecio now holds several records on her belt after her ‘herstoric’ win.

On August 3, 2021, Philippines’ Nesthy Petecio competed for the final round of the Women’s featherweight boxing, 55-57kg category. Against her was Japan’s Sena Irie.

After three rounds, the match between Irie and Petecio ended with a unanimous decision in favor against the Japanese contender. Ultimately, Nesthy brought home the silver medal.

Through that medal, Nesthy made several records for the country and herself. For one, it is the first boxing medal for the country since Onyok Velasco’s silver win in 1996. She also got the first ever silver medal for a female contender country in boxing, and the second ever to do so — after Hidilyn Diaz’s Rio 2016 medal.

Ironically, Nesthy’s medal is also the second from Tokyo, with the first one being Anthony Villanueva’s silver in Tokyo 1964.

Most importantly, Nesthy holds the 12th medal in the Philippines’ 97-year-history at the Olympic games. She also pushed the medal tally of the Philippines up to 2 in Tokyo 2020 — 1 gold and 1 silver.

Meanwhile, the Philippines’ Tokyo 2020 medal haul is now at 4, with the 2 coming from the secured medals of Carlo Paalam and Eumir Marcial, which are also in boxing.
