New shows on TV5 starting July 20

TV5’s most-awaited programming revamp is finally starting to materialize.

Starting next Monday, some of TV5’s slate of new programs will officially begin airing.

Telenovelas are back

After years of absence on Philippine TV, TV5 is bringing the genre back to the mainstream.

MariMar

The original telenovela that started it all is now back on Philippine TV. Watch Thalia in her most iconic role as MariMar. Originally aired on RPN 9 in the ’90s, the show has been airing on TV5’s sister channel One Screen since it launched last June 15.

MariMar is expected to air every weekday morning at 10:30am.

Betty en NY

The show is the revival of “Betty La Fea” which garnered a widespread attention during the 2000s when the American remake “Ugly Betty” was aired. Betty also had a local remake on ABS-CBN in 2008 starring Bea Alonzo. This time, it would be the 2019 version’s turn to tell the story of Betty and her life in New York. The show has also been airing on One Screen since June.

Betty en NY is slated to air weeknights at 9:30pm.

Tierra de Reyes

The story is about the quest for revenge by brothers Samuel, Flavio, and Arturo to the people who caused the death of their sister Alma: the Del Juncos. They then devise the plan to make sisters Sofia, Irina, and Andrea fall in love with them. If the premise sounds familiar, then that’s because the show is based on Pasion de Gavilanes or locally known as Pasion de Amor.

The drama unfolds this Monday at 10:30pm.

American dramas are back, too

In recent years, as TV5 cut down its production of homegrown programs, many American TV hits like Supernatural and The Walking Dead were brought in to fill the station’s lineup. Foreign dramas however went on and off during the past year as 5 transitioned programming to a more balanced mix of entertainment, sports, and news.

Legends of Tomorrow

For the fans of Supergirl, The Flash, and Arrow (all of which have had their Tagalized version aired on TV5 at one point), then this show is definitely a must-watch for you.

Set in the same Arrowverse as the other three series, LOT is set to begin airing this Monday at 7:30pm.

Gotham

On top of LOT, a Batman-based crime drama is also included in the new lineup. Set in the fictional Gotham city, follow James Gordon and his partner Harvey Bullock as they try to solve the crimes that arise inside the city.

It is set to air every weeknight at 8:30pm.

Lakorn

TV5 is also welcoming Thai teledramas to the fold as it launches Furious Fire that will air from Monday to Friday at 1:00pm.

Movie blocks

Films that will be aired on new movie blocks TVflix and Sine Asya are provided by CrystalSky Multimedia. For the former, it aims to showcase best flicks from other regions like Europe and Latin America starting Tuesday, July 21. Meanwhile, the latter, living up to its name will focus on airing Asian movies, with Japan’s Ultraman Ginga S gracing the initial telecast on the 23rd.

Confirmed shows with no definite date of first broadcast

As of press time, these shows have already been greenlighted and sharing teasers across various media. However, they are yet to release an update about the schedule of their first telecast.

Rumored new shows

In an article published by ABS-CBN News on Friday, July 17, 2020, they have listed Kapamilya stars that will soon have their programs on the network.

First up is Jessy Mendiola who is said to have a new fitness show titled Fit For Life that will produced by Cignal Entertainment.

Comedienne “Mamang” Pokwang, meanwhile, will have 2 programs under APT Entertainment: Fill in the Banks, a gameshow with Jose Manalo and Rise and Shine, a morning talk show with Pauleen Luna and a yet-unnamed teen actress. Both shows are expected to be blocktimers on the station.

Speaking of APT, they are also rumored to produce (at least based on a report from Bandera) a spin-off show of the popular Eat Bulaga segment Bawal Judgmental titled Pwede Judgmental starring the JoWaPao trio (Jose Manalo, Wally Bayola, Paolo Ballesteros).

Going back, the same ABS-CBN news story also disclosed that Cornerstone Entertainment, a talent agency whose artists are mostly identified with the Kapamilya network, is also set to venture into content production. CS top exec Erickson Raymundo confirmed that they will do “two projects” with the Kapatid network and affiliate Cignal.

In addition, the name of renowned director Joel Lamangan is also dropped as he is said to be pitching a TV series for channel 5.

With these new developments, it is indeed exciting times for those at TV5 and their partners. But the million dollar question is: will the viewers flock to watch those shows? Only time and ratings will tell.
