“Happy with progress.”
That is what national pole vaulter EJ Obiena said after scoring his first gold medal in the current outdoor season.
The 30-year-old was able to take the leadership in the Czeslaw Cybulski Memorial, which was held in Poznan, Poland on Monday, June 29 (Manila time).
It is a considerable progress for Obiena, as he was reeling from being the last-placer in the recent Wanda Diamond League in Doha, Qatar, where he was not able to clear the 5.42 meter-bar.
“The height and numbers are yet to come, but happy to come away with the gold here at Czeslaw Cybulski Memorial. Thank you for having me. On to the next,” continued Obiena.
In the Polish completion, he was able jump and clear the 5.72-meter bar, beating Owen Heard of Great Britain, who bagged silver, and Matteo Olivieri from Italy, who took the bronze.
Meanwhile, prior to this, Obiena competed at the Flight Circus Düsseldorf in Germany, which was the final indoor competition in his calendar for the season, and bagged the silver.
This year, he also won gold medals in Cottbus, Germany, which he shared with Menno Vloon, the Asian Indoor Championships in Tianjin, China, and the ISTAF Indoor contest in Berlin, Germany.
