Filipina tennis star Alex Eala, Turkish partner Zeynep Sönmez exit Madrid Open doubles

This marks the end of Eala’s stint in the tournament.

This marks the end of Eala’s stint in the tournament.

On Saturday, April 25, Filipina tennis star Alex Eala returned to the clay-colored court of the Mutua Madrid Open 2025 to play in the Round of 16 in women’s doubles with her Turkish partner Zeynep Sönmez.

Together, they fought against the formidable tandem of Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova.

In the first set, the higher ranking opponents of both Eala and Sönmez immediately showed their might and went with a near-sweep against them.

That served as a major call for the duo to up their ante in the second set, and, lo and behold, gave Townsend and Siniakova a run for their money as the Pinay-Turkish pair inched their way.

But, alas, their best is was not good enough as the match wrapped up after that, despite the clear effort to bring to a decider.

Eala and Sönmez exited the women’s doubles in Madrid, 6-1, 7-5.

In her Instagram story, Eala wrote: “That’s it for Madrid. So grateful for my time here. Will be back stronger.”

It is also confirmed that Alex will next compete in the Catalonia WTA 125 tournament, also in Spain, which will run from April 27 to May 3.

The action continues for her at the Rome Open, another WTA 1000, in Italy, which will then begin on May 5.

Similar to her situation in Catalonia, which depended on her performance in Madrid, her listing in the Parma Ladies Open—which happens from May 11 to 16—will also be dependent on how she will fare in Rome.

The athlete will then move to France for the French Open, which is set to start on May 18 and will run until June 7.
