Philippine Volcanoes defend title at Union Cup 2026 in Thailand

Last Saturday, July 18, the Philippine national rugby team, the Philippine Volcanoes, competed in the finals of the Union Cup 2026 in Nonthaburi, Thailand.

During which, the team competed against the squad from Malaysia. The first half was rather shaky for the Volcanoes, which are the defending champs, as the other side did not back down, and at one point, even led the game.

However, they were able to push it to end with a 15-15 tie at the halftime.

From there, however, the Philippine team ignited and exploded with a powerful performance from players such as Ryan Rodriguez Curtis and Richard Nicholas Lewis leading their teammates to rise and deliver a 39-18 score in the finale and successfully defend the title.

Throughout the tournament, the Philippine rugby performed strongly, taking on a massive 74-0 win against Laos and against Singapore in the semifinals, 33-10.

Meanwhile, in 2027, the Philippines is already confirmed to be hosting the Unions Cup, with the Volcanoes looking to secure a historic three-peat.
