The queens have expressed their thoughts on the matter.
In their respective social media accounts, two Miss Universe queens, Pia Wurtzbach and Catriona Gray, have shared their thoughts on the recent viral controversy on social media.
Specifically, the two conveyed their message in light of the “halfies” comment by pageant king Brandon Espiritu, which has earned the ire of the public, including other pageant winners and celebrities.
Through her Facebook account, Wurtzbach, who was crowned Miss Universe 2015, said her piece in conjunction with the country’s 128th Independence Day last June 12.
“I have always believed that identity isn’t measured by where you were born, how you look, or how others see you,” said Pia. “It’s shaped by the values you carry, the roots you honor, the love you have for where you come from, and the pride you feel whenever you see our flag represented anywhere in the world.“
She continued, “There is no single way to be Filipino. We each carry that connection in our own way… through our experiences, our families, and the values that bring us home.“
“Proud to be Filipino. Always. ❤️”, Pia concluded her post.
Meanwhile, Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray took to her broadcast channel on Instagram to express her thoughts on the matter.
For her, there are different types of Filipinos who are making impact in their respective fields.
“Ang daming iba’t ibang klaseng Pinoy – mula sa iba’t ibang probinsya, halfsies, hanggang 2nd, 3rd, or 4th generation Filipinos – who are making an incredible impact in their industries and positively contributing to our nation. Sila ang mas deserving ng platform kaysa sa iba diyan,” she said.
Queen Cat also emphasized that it is better to give a platform, may it be in pageantry or otherwise, to people who truly deserve it.
Especially, she said, “To those whose love for country extends beyond a momentary spotlight; those whose pagmamahal sa bayan is more than just lip service, but is reflected in their consistent actions, character, and values.“
