In a post by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) on Tuesday, January 6, it bared the finished pavement inside the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Manila, which was done partnership with the Department of Public Works and Highways.

The road network inside the complex, which connects facilities, has been improved ahead of the inaugural Philippine Women’s Open later this month.

With improved asphalt on its road networks connecting key facilities, RMSC is now more accessible and ready to host major sporting events—starting with the historic Philippine Women’s Open (WTA 125) this January 26–31,” the caption of the PSC’s post read.

Round-the-clock works have been carried out on the complex over the past month as the stadium plays host to the said international tennis event, which is the first of the country to be included in the WTA 125 calendar.

Other construction carried out include the hard court themselves, with the training courts converted into competition courts complete with bleachers for spectators.

In a previous statement, PSC Chairman Gregorio said regarding the PWO, “This is more than a tournament. This is about giving our athletes the chance to test themselves against the world’s best, inspiring the next generation, and placing the Philippines firmly on the global tennis map.

He furthered, “The greatest champions began their journeys on public courts. By opening access and investing in world-class events, we are giving Filipinos the same chance to dream big and achieve greatness.”

Tennis in the Philippines is gaining an unprecedented momentum, as Filipina tennis star Alex Eala continues to rise in the world rankings, where she currently sits at number 53.

She also clinched the first gold medal for the country in the sport in over 26 years at the 33rd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games last December.
