Mw 6.4 quake strikes east of Manay, Davao Oriental

At 11:02 am on Wednesday, January 7, a Magnitude 6.4 quake struck waters off the town of Manay in Davao Oriental.

Originally reported by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) to be at Magnitude 6.7, it was corrected a few minutes later with an update.

Still, the powerful quake had a depth of just 23 kilometers, with reported intensities being pinpointed all around the island of Mindanao.

Intensity V was felt in Manay, as well as Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur; and Talacogon, Agusan del Sur. Meanwhile, Intensity IV was reported in the City of Bislig and Cagwait, Surigao del Sur; and Tarragona and Cateel, Davao Oriental.

Over to the City of Tandag, Surigao del Sur; Boston and Baganga, Davao Oriental; and Claver, Surigao del Norte, it was Intensity III.

Davao City, General Santis, Butuan, as well as Baybay and Palo and Leyte; Hinundayan, San Juan, and San Francisco, Southern Leyte logged Intensity II.

As for the Intensities recorded by instruments, it was officially Intensity IV in Malungon, Sarangani, Intensity III in Kiamba, Sarangani and the City of Digos Davao Del Sur; and Davao City.

PHIVOLCS also clarified that there are no tsunami threats from the Wednesday’s quake.

Coincidentally, Manay was also where the strong Twin Magnitude 7.4 and 6.8 earthquakes struck back in October.
