Philippines finishes fourth overall at ASEAN School Games with 43 medals

At the recent 14th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) School Games, which was held in Brunei, the Philippines was able to secure a higher placement in the overall charts.

Represented by 200 young athletes, the group was able to collectively produce a total of 43 medals—11 gold, 10 silver, and 22 bronze.

This performance earned them a fourth place finish overall, which is an improvement from the last ASEAN School Games in 2024, where PH ended in sixth place.

The Athletics team brought home the most medals for the country. Aside from that, Bohol’s Jhul Ian Cañalita was also able smash tje record for Boys’ 3,000 meters with a time of 8:47.52.

Meanwhile, NCR:s Ma. Lhynette Libranda broke the six-year record flr Girls’ 100-meter hurdles in the semifinals at 14.20 seconds, before setting a new personal record in the finals with 13.82 seconds.

Two gold medals were flinched by Anthony Cariaso lf NCR in the Boys’ 800-meter and 1,500-meter runs.

The Philippines also took back the crown in basketball, after the undefeated run of both the Boys’ at Girls’ teams.

Wushu earned one silver at two bronze medals, which completed overall medal tally of the country.

The delegation received a heroes’ welcome upon their return to the country last Friday night (November 28), where they were greeted by their families, officials, and other supporters.

In his message, Education Secretary Sonny Angara said the team’s performance at the ASG symbolizes the continued betterment of the sports development for the youth, which is in line with the administration’s goal of improving school-based athletics and expanding opportunities for learner-athletes.

Mission accomplished kayo! Beyond the medals, your grit and discipline reminded us why we must keep strengthening school sports and supporting every young Filipino athlete. Maraming salamat sa tapang, husay, at dangal na inalay ninyo para sa Pilipinas,” said Angara.

A total of ten countries in the ASEAN competed in eight sports—Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Swimming, Netball, Pencak Silat, Sepak Takraw, and Wushu—throughout the duration of the tournament.
