Alex Eala clinches historic Guadalajara Open 2025 championship

On Sunday, September 7 (Manila time), Filipina tennis star Alex Eala competed in the finals match of the Guadalajara 125 Open 2025 in Mexico.

During which, the World No. 75 player faced off against world No. 134 Panna Udvardy from Hungary with the goal of being the first professional WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) titleholder from the Philippines.

The said game also mark’s Eala’s second finals appearance, following her runner-up finish at the Eastbourne Open in late June.

As for the game proper, the first round went to the Hungarian opponent, but the Filipina representative was able to get her momentum in the succeeding rounds, 1-6, 7-5, 6-3, and ultimately bagged the championship title.

Her victory in this match also helped her achieve the impeccable record of a clean winning streak at Guadalajara.

She first bested Arianne Hartono in the first round, Varvara Lepchenko in the Round-of-16, and Nicole Fossa Huergo in the quarterfinals to reach the semis, where she then won against Kayla Day.

2025 has been quite a year for the 20-year-old, as she reach multiple milestones in the past few months.

The list also includes her main draw match against Barbora Kerjcikova at the Wimbledon and her win against Clara Tauson at the US Open 2025, which helped Alex become the first Filipino player in history to win a Grand Slam main draw in the Open Era.
