This comes amid tensions around the island.

In its statement, the Philippines’s Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) said that stands ready with MECO Chairperson and Resident Representative Cheloy E. Garafil to set in motion, when needed, its contingency plan in any emergency situations.

The DMW, in coordination with MECO and the Migrant Workers Offices (MWOs) in Taiwan, is closely monitoring the situation,” it said.

The agency also expressed its gratitude to MECO Chairperson Garafil, “for her leadership and assurance of the general well-being of our OFWs, in close coordination with Taiwan authorities.”

Assuring the over 150,000 Filipinos based or working in the island, The DMW said that it “remains vigilant and prepared to ensure the safety and protection of our OFWs.”

To our OFWs and their families, we urge you to remain calm and stay informed through official government channels,” the DMW added.

This statement comes amid the escalation of tension across the strait in recent days after China held military drills around the island, which it claims as part of its One-China Policy.
