On Sunday, January 19, popular social networking platform TikTok formally suspended their services in the United States.
This, as a law that bans them from operating in the country, unless the app was divested by its parent firm ByteDance to another entity, was enacted.
In its in-app message to its users, TikTok wrote, “Sorry, TikTok isn’t available right now.”
Underneath it, the platform explained, “A law banning TikTok has been enacted in the U.S. Unfortunately, that means you can’t use TikTok for now.”
Despite that, they remained hopeful, and told their users to hang on.
“We are fortunate that President Trump has indicated that he will work with us on a solution to reinstate TikTok once he takes office. Please stay tuned!”
The social networking service (SNS) refers to a comment made by incoming President Donald Trump, who shared on his own Truth Social platform that he will be making a decision on the matter “soon,” but will have to “review the situation” first.
Trump will be inaugurated on Monday, January 20 (US time).
TikTok, launched in 2016, now boasts over 2 billion users worldwide and is known for its algorithm-based shortform video feed.
Apart from them, associated products of ByteDance, namely CapCut and Lemon8 were also affected.
Like TikTok, they have also been pulled from the application downloading platforms, and have stopped working for their users in the states at the moment.
