The airport operator says that they are working to address the matter.

On Tuesday, October 22, it was reported that the baggage handling system at Terminal 3 of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) has experienced a major malfunction, which disrupted the processing of passengers’ check-in luggages.

In a statement, New NAIA Infrastracture Corp. (NNIC), operator of the airport, said that they are working with airlines to implement “contingency measures.”

It continued by saying that they are now working with low-cost carrier Cebu Pacific, which operates majority of its flights from Terminal 3, with extra manpower already deployed to “expedite baggage processing.”

Furthermore, the NNIC described that the system is now 20 years old and is already a top priority to be replaced since the new operator took over the management of NAIA in September.

At present, they have already procured “a new, advanced system, with additional redundancy measures set to be implemented to prevent future disruptions and enhance operational efficiency.”

Meanwhile, in an advisory posted at 10:00 pm, Cebu Pacific said that it “has made good progress in resolving baggage delays in recent days caused by the defective baggage handling system.”

“[Cebu Pacific] continues to work very closely with the New NAIA Infrastructure Corp. (NNIC) and expect the situation will further improve from tomorrow,” it added.

Terminal 3 is the newest of the four terminals at NAIA, having opened in 2008. It serves both international and domestic flights of multiple airlines like Cebu Pacific, Singapore Airlines, Turkish Airlines, and Qatar Airways, to name a few.

In recent times, however, it has been plagued by numerous problems. The most notable of which is the infestation of pests like rats and termites back in February 2024, as well as the faulty electric supply and air-conditioning system.
