ABS-CBN, TV5 seal multi-year content deal

The Kapamilya × Kapatid partnership continues.

In a contract signing event today, June 27, 2023, ABS-CBN and MediaQuest Holdings through TV5 Network, Inc. signed a multi-year content deal. Through this, the country’s leading content provider will continue to air on channel 5 its most of its major content.

The list includes top primetime programs of ABS-CBN Entertainment, which include titles ‘FPJ’s Batang Quiapo,’ ‘The Iron Heart,’ and ‘Dirty Linen’. On weekday daytime, talk show ‘Magandang Buhay’ is also part of the list of programs that will still air on the Kapatid network under the deal.

The Sunday afternoon block formed by ‘ASAP Natin ‘To’ and the ‘FPJ Da King’ movie block will remain on TV5. Notably, these two shows were also the first two Kapamilya shows that aired on the Kapatid network in January 2021. Weekend primetime shows, currently ‘Everybody, Sing!,’ ‘I Can See Your Voice,’ and ‘Rated Korina’ continue their run on TV5.

Upcoming afternoon soaps ‘Pira-Pirasong Paraiso,’ and ‘Nag-aapoy na Damdamin’ are also part of the deal. The two dramas have also been unveiled in April and May, respectively, as co-productions between ABS-CBN Entertainment and TV5. They are expected to air in July as part of the strengthened afternoon blocks of TV5, Kapamilya Channel, and A2Z.

Absent, however, from the roster of Kapamilya shows in the network is noontime program ‘It’s Showtime’. Importantly, today’s contract signing comes a few hours before the sealing of a separate deal between ABS-CBN Entertainment and GMA Network to air ‘Showtime’ on GTV. That event is expected to take place at 3:30 pm in Vertis North, Quezon City.

During the contract signing, TV5 Chairman Manny V. Pangilinan even quipped that they could have done the signing after the 3:30 event. He said

It’s a holiday. Why we sign at 11:00 [am]? What’s the rush? … You know we could have signed at 4:00 or 5:00 after the 3:00 pm signing.

Despite the changes regarding the noontime block, ABS-CBN Chairman Mark Lopez describes their team-up with TV5 as “a partnership we’re very happy with and I think there are a lot of opportunities that we can do together.” When asked about the noontime show, Lopez is thankful to TV5 for giving them the opportunity to showcase and accommodate the program for the past year. He also wished TV5 the best with the new TVJ show.

TV5 President and CEO Guido Zaballero on the latest deal between them and ABS-CBN, “we just continue to develop really good content together.” He adds, “we value the partnership we have with ABS-CBN.” Zaballero also proclaimed “stronger together.”

About the signal reach of the Kapatid network, Zaballero stated that they are in the process of enhancing their signal in areas “from north to south.” Particularly, Ilocos, Zambales, Batangas, Metro Manila, among others.

On ABS-CBN Chairman Mark Lopez’s message of gratitude, the TV5 president stated that “this has been a partnership for years now.” “We [TV5], too, are thankful to ABS-CBN for establishing a relationship with us and putting their content on our channel.” “At the end of the day, it’s a firm belief na yung TV viewer ang panalo dito,” he ended his statement.

The closer ties between ABS-CBN and TV5 began in 2021, when the two Kapamilya Sunday afternoon shows aired on the network. This was soon followed by the primetime dramas in March of that year. In August 2022, ABS-CBN was supposed to acquire 35 percent of TV5, but the deal ultimately broke down amid the political climate. In spite of that, ABS-CBN and TV5 still went forward with their relationship, which is now set to continue through 2028.
