Schedule Suggestions: The much-needed changes to GTV as ‘It’s Showtime’ enters the channel

“What’s up, Madlang People at mga Kapuso!”

On Tuesday, June 20, 2023, ABS-CBN confirmed the departure of ‘It’s Showtime’ from the noontime block of TV5. The news comes a week before the expiry of their blocktime contract with TV5 for ‘Showtime’ and the launch of TVJ’s new noontime show on the Kapatid network on July 1. The company also said that they “respectfully declined TV5’s offer” to air the show on the 4:30 pm slot.

Instead, the Kapamilya noontime show will be moving to its new home, on GMA’s secondary channel GTV on free TV channel 27. They are set to join the Kapuso channel’s noontime block on July 1 as well. “A big contract signing event” will also happen soon, GMA Network Chairman Atty. Felipe Gozon said on Tuesday.

‘It’s Showtime’ to air on GTV starting this July

RELATED STORY

With the move of ‘Showtime’ to GTV, it will consequentially bring changes to the channel. Primarily, to the network’s broadcast of shows in its afternoon block, that includes the coverage of National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA).

In this edition of Schedule Suggestions, let’s discuss and suggest some possible changes in GTV’s programming line-up in conjunction with the entry of ‘It’s Showtime’ to the channel in July.

  • 5:30 am – Dobol B TV
  • 9:00 am – Regional TV News
  • 9:30 am – GTV Kiddie Authority
  • 11:00 am – Balitanghali

  • 11:25 pm – Unbreak My Heart (Mon-Thu) / Regional TV News (replay) (Fri)

During NCAA’s off-season on weekdays, ‘Showtime’ is well-positioned in the prime noontime hours. Its effect in the overall programming will also be minute. Only the Siesta Fiesta Movies and the Heart of Asia afternoon block are affected.

Weekdays (NCAA season)

Scenario 1: If all games will air live on the channel
  • 5:30 am – Dobol B TV
  • 9:00 am – Regional TV News
  • 9:30 am – GTV Kiddie Authority
  • 11:00 am – Balitanghali

  • 9:30 am – GTV Kiddie Authority
  • 11:00 am – Balitanghali

Now, this is where things get exciting. During the NCAA season, there are a few options that GMA/GTV could explore with its commitment to the NCAA league. For this one, let’s check how they would able to air all games live still, in spite of the existence of ‘Showtime’ at noon.

During game days, the NCAA could air beginning 3:00 pm or right after the Kapamilya noontime show. Considering that the block airs for more or less five hours, it would end at 8:00 pm in this setup. Meaning, GTV’s current pre-primetime news magazine show ‘Dapat Alam Mo!’ will be displaced in this scenario, and could end up airing at 8:00 pm instead.

With that, if GMA is still insistent in airing its Telebabad offerings on GTV, all of those would have to air on a tape-delayed basis on GTV. In the sample above, the drama block will most likely start at 11:00 pm, which will subsequently extend GTV’s broadcast day way into the following day at 12:45 am.

During off-days, the setup should most likely remain, with the 24 Oras simulcast also airing as an additional filler in the NCAA slot.

Scenario 2: If both games will air live on Pinoy Hits and one or two matches will air on a tape-delayed basis on GTV
  • 5:30 am – Dobol B TV
  • 9:00 am – Regional TV News
  • 9:30 am – GTV Kiddie Authority
  • 11:00 am – Balitanghali
  • 12:00 nn – It’s Showtime
  • 3:00 pm – NCAA
  • 5:30 pm – Dapat Alam Mo!
  • 6:30 pm – 24 Oras
  • 8:00 pm – NCAA (delayed telecast)
  • 10:30 pm – State of the Nation
  • 11:00 pm – Voltes V Legacy
  • 11:35 pm – Royal Blood
  • 12:10 am – Unbreak My Heart (Mon-Thu)
  • (During off-days)
  • 5:30 am – Dobol B TV
  • 9:00 am – Regional TV News
  • 9:30 am – GTV Kiddie Authority
  • 11:00 am – Balitanghali
  • 12:00 nn – It’s Showtime
  • 3:00 pm – HOA: Jumong
  • 3:30 pm – HOA: In Need of Romance 3
  • 4:00 pm – Afternoon Movie Break
  • 5:30 pm – Dapat Alam Mo!
  • 6:30 pm – 24 Oras (simulcast)
  • 8:00 pm – G! Flicks
  • 9:45 pm – HOA / GTV’s weekend public affairs shows
  • 10:30 pm – State of the Nation
  • 11:00 pm – Voltes V
  • 11:35 pm – Royal Blood
  • 12:10 am – Unbreak My Heart (Mon-Thu)

Another set-up is to allow all NCAA games to instead air its live matches over at Pinoy Hits. This would be of great help in breathing life to the channel, which until now has no original programming and is dependent mostly on simulcasts and a handful of archive materials. NCAA on Pinoy Hits will also mean that GTV will only broadcast one match live or will both would air on a tape-delayed basis.

The only problem or hurdle would be is the ‘reach’ of Pinoy Hits. Not in the signal coverage part, but more on the brand awareness of the public. Considering that it is just widely used as a platform for additional simulcasts and other stuff at the moment.

With that, let’s just take a peek on how a ‘NCAA on Pinoy Hits’ would look like, should it come into fruition. After which, we will see how a Saturday would look like for GTV with ‘Showtime’ under its fold.

  • (Pinoy Hits Weekdays)
  • 5:30 am – Unang Hirit
  • 8:00 am – Dobol B TV
  • 9:00 am – Regional TV News
  • 9:30 am – Morning drama reruns
  • 11:00 am – Balitanghali
  • 12:00 nn – NCAA
  • 2:30 pm – NCAA Game On!
  • 3:00 pm – NCAA
  • 5:30 pm – Dapat Alam Mo!
  • 6:30 pm – 24 Oras
  • 8:00 pm – Primetime block
  • (During off-days)
  • 5:30 am – Unang Hirit
  • 8:00 am – Dobol B TV
  • 9:00 am – Regional TV News
  • 9:30 am – Morning drama reruns
  • 11:00 am – Balitanghali
  • 12:00 nn – Telehapon dramas
  • 2:30 pm – NCAA Game On!
  • 3:00 pm – Best of NCAA
  • 5:30 pm – Dapat Alam Mo!
  • 6:30 pm – 24 Oras
  • 8:00 pm – Primetime block

Saturdays

  • 5:30 am – Dobol B TV
  • 9:00 am – Regional TV News
  • 9:30 am – GTV Kiddie Authority
  • 11:00 am – GTV Fantaseries
  • 12:00 nn – It’s Showtime
  • 3:00 pm – HOA: The Blacklist
  • 4:00 pm – HOA: Tomorrow’s Cantabile
  • 5:00 pm – [HOA drama]
  • 5:30 pm – 24 Oras Weekend
  • 6:15 pm – Pinas Sarap
  • 7:00 pm – Good News
  • 7:45 pm – Brigada
  • 8:30 pm – G! Flicks
  • 10:30 pm – CIA with BA
  • 11:30 pm – In Touch

During off-season Saturdays, GTV still has plenty of room for ‘Showtime,’ with the only displaced programs being a couple of Asian dramas, and again, movie blocks. GTV could use this as an opportunity to further reduce its reliance on movies, and just air one block, with it being placed on primetime.

Saturdays (NCAA season)

Scenario 1: One morning and afternoon game

  • 5:30 am – Dobol B TV
  • 9:00 am – Regional TV News
  • 9:30 am – NCAA (LIVE)
  • 12:00 nn – It’s Showtime
  • 3:00 pm – NCAA (LIVE)
  • 5:30 pm – 24 Oras Weekend
  • 6:15 pm – Pinas Sarap
  • 7:00 pm – Good News
  • 7:45 pm – Brigada
  • 8:30 pm – G! Flicks
  • 10:30 pm – CIA with BA
  • 11:30 pm – In Touch

Fortunately, unlike on weekdays, the NCAA could still air two live matches on GTV every Saturday. Its first option being to mount a morning game, and one afternoon game. ‘It’s Showtime’ would then air in between both matches.

It is a good setup, considering that there will be minimal impact and adjustment to GTV’s entire programming. Only the Saturday edition of its Kiddie Authority and Fantaseries block will be affected.

Scenario 2: One afternoon game, and another on primetime
  • 5:30 am – Dobol B TV
  • 9:00 am – Regional TV News
  • 9:30 am – GTV Kiddie Authority
  • 11:00 am – GTV Fantaseries
  • 12:00 nn – It’s Showtime
  • 3:00 pm – NCAA (LIVE)
  • 5:30 pm – 24 Oras Weekend
  • 6:15 pm – NCAA (LIVE)
  • 8:45 pm – Pinas Sarap
  • 9:30 pm – Good News
  • 10:15 pm – Brigada
  • 11:00 pm – CIA with BA
  • 12:00 mn – In Touch

The second option for the NCAA when is schedules two matches on Saturdays is to put one in the afternoon, right after ‘Showtime’ at 3:00 pm and the other right after ’24 Oras Weekend’ at 6:15 pm. To make that possible, slight adjustments throughout the rest of the evening would also have to be made.

Scenario 3: Tripleheader (if necessary)
  • 5:30 am – Dobol B TV
  • 9:00 am – Regional TV News
  • 9:30 am – NCAA (LIVE)
  • 12:00 nn – It’s Showtime
  • 3:00 pm – NCAA (LIVE)
  • 5:30 pm – 24 Oras Weekend
  • 6:15 pm – NCAA (LIVE)
  • 8:45 pm – Pinas Sarap
  • 9:30 pm – Good News
  • 10:15 pm – Brigada
  • 11:00 pm – CIA with BA
  • 12:00 mn – In Touch

When the need arises, GTV could also accommodate a NCAA tripleheader Saturday. One would air in the morning, another in the afternoon, and the last one (which could be a marquee game) is broadcast on primetime.

Sundays

  • 5:30 am – Dobol B TV
  • 7:00 am – Healing Galing
  • 7:30 am – Key of David
  • 8:00 am – GTV Kiddie Authority
  • 11:00 am – GTV Fantaseries
  • 12:00 nn – Siesta Fiesta Movies
  • 1:30 pm – Afternoon Movie Break
  • 3:00 pm – HOA: The Blacklist
  • 4:00 pm – HOA: Tomorrow’s Cantabile
  • 5:00 pm – [HOA drama]
  • 5:30 pm – 24 Oras Weekend
  • 6:00 pm – Farm To Table
  • 6:45 pm – iJuander
  • 7:30 pm – Biyahe ni Drew
  • 8:15 pm – Resibo (delayed)
  • 8:50 pm – Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho (simulcast) or G! Flicks
  • 10:40 pm – Regal Studio Presents (delayed)
  • 11:25 pm – Hay, Bahay! (rerun)

Despite ‘Showtime’ being a Monday through Saturday engagement only, GTV should extend its ‘house cleaning’ to its Sunday line-up.

To add news coverage every Sunday, GTV should revive the Dobol B TV block. It could run short, maybe around 90 minutes only. Its sister channel Pinoy Hits could air the block longer on Sunday mornings to create an alternative programming, though.

Moving on, the Kiddie Authority could also be slimmed down to 3 hours on Sunday, with the Fantaseries block getting the 11:00 am to 12 noon hour. Currently, from noon to 6:50 pm, GTV is mirroring the programming of GMA 7. What it could do is to instead provide counter programming, so as to assure the public that there is an alternative option for as many groups as possible.

In the afternoons, in lieu of making a long movie (marathon) block, an option is to make the Saturday Heart of Asia block air additional episodes on Sundays from 3:00 to 5:30 pm.

With slight adjustments, ‘Resibo,’ being a Public Affairs show, could instead air on a delayed basis on GTV at 8:15 pm to form a Sunday evening public affairs counter-programming block on the channel. Meanwhile, major PA show ‘Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho’ could either continue airing on a simultaneous basis or an alternative to it is to introduce a Sunday edition of G! Flicks. A delayed telecast of ‘Regal Studio Presents’ could also take over the current slot of ‘TBATS’ at 10:40 pm.

Sundays (NCAA season)

  • 5:30 am – Dobol B TV
  • 7:00 am – Healing Galing
  • 7:30 am – Key of David
  • 8:00 am – GTV Kiddie Authority
  • 11:00 am – GTV Fantaseries
  • 12:00 nn – NCAA
  • 2:30 pm – Game On!
  • 3:00 pm – NCAA
  • 5:30 pm – 24 Oras Weekend
  • 6:00 pm – Farm To Table
  • 6:45 pm – iJuander
  • 7:30 pm – Biyahe ni Drew
  • 8:15 pm – Resibo (delayed)
  • 8:50 pm – Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho (simulcast) or G! Flicks
  • 10:40 pm – Regal Studio Presents (delayed)
  • 11:25 pm – Hay, Bahay! (rerun)

During the NCAA season, the Sunday block of the league could keep its setup in the past few seasons on GTV, and air live from 12 noon to 5:30 pm. No major adjustments will also have to be made to do that.

The addition of ABS-CBN’s noontime variety show ‘It’s Showtime’ should be a win-win situation for the program and GTV itself. First, the demographic of the noontime show is quite young, thus cementing GTV’s (supposed) reputation as a younger-skewing TV network. Another, the program will also benefit from GTV’s wider reach, as opposed to TV5’s current transmission network.

Another, and perhaps, the most important one that should happen. GTV must take this opportunity to make the much-needed change to its overall line-up, and somehow, return to its original intent of becoming the alternative channel to GMA, as well as the other networks. Not just that, a holistic change in GTV’s programming could also possibly spill over onto the other Kapuso channels (most especially Pinoy Hits), and hopefully, solve their identity crisis as soon as possible.

‘It’s Showtime’ will begin airing on GTV on Saturday, July 1, 2023, at 12 noon. It will air right after ‘Balitanghali’ on weekdays.
