Last Saturday, September 12, Ben&Ben band members Paolo Benjamin and Miguel Benjamin Guico held a book talk for their newly released story book entitled The Traveller Across Dimensions.
After discussing the content, the twin brothers sat down with Manila Tytana Colleges’ Dean Ella Mallabo-Mutas and Dr. Eve Antonio for an in-depth conversation regarding what they went through in making the said book and their personal thoughts.
“Una naming naging challenge, I would say, dahil bago siya sa amin, yung proseso ng pagsusulat nung libro,” Miguel opened up.
He told that in music, they have three to five minutes to tell a story that they want to share. “Meron kang three to five minutes to say the whole story of what you want to say from the first verse down to the last note of the song,” said the vocalist-guitarist.
Miguel then noted that opposite that, in crafting a book, they have more space to express a story.
“Ang kaibahan nitong libro, parang ang laki ng espasyo para mag-express ng story and also kung paano mo ilalahad yung isang ideya mo for every chapter. Simpleng smple lang, yung salita mas marami. Kumbaga, it’s both exciting but also very challenging to get more out of you. Kasi if a song is how do you say more with less, itong book is how do you say more with more?” he said.
For his part, Paolo said: “’Yung naging exciting is yung pagkakataon na mas magkaroon ng mas malaking salamin na nag-e-exist in my experience sa book. Kung ang salamin ay masasalamin mo yung sarili mong mga mga experience by breathing life into the characters, the same way that everyday life in itself is an unfolding of a story. Parang ganun yung experience of writing a book, kumbaga step by step na karanasan ng character, yung mga natututunan niya at saka yung mga na-e-encounter niya na mga ibang tao.”
He added that the book gives them a different experience, calling the process both “satisfying” and “unique.”
“And satisfying na mag-unfold siya actually habang ginagawa mo siya. Meaning may mga bagay na hindi mo ini-expect na pagpupuntahan ng storya, pupuntahan nung character. Very unique siya for me in the form of fiction and book storytelling,” Paolo furthered.
