‘Umagang Kay Ganda’ photos of Kapamilya news personalities trigger comeback speculations

With viewers also looking forward to see the morning show return to the airwaves.

In recent days, netizens, specifically loyal viewers of ABS-CBN, were sent abuzz after seemingly innocent photos of numerous Kapamilya news personalities started piling up.

Those were not just any usual pictures as they had a common denominator—they took these images with a conspicuous title card that many have been used to seeing at the start of their days before the network’s free-to-air shutdown in 2020.

The likes of chief of reporters Jeff Canoy, It’s Showtime and DZMM host Amy Perez, as well as reporters Jose Carretero and Jonathan Magistrado were seen posing in front of the Umagang Kay Ganda program logo.

As soon as these photos started circulating, many speculated that this could be a hint that a comeback of the beloved ABS-CBN show is in the works.

As if these were not enough, toward the end of the edition of the afternoon news program TV Patrol Express, a shot of an old video clip from UKG was deliberately played from a computer In-vision.

Viewers have since expressed their wishlists for the team that they would like to see once they rise up and early in the morning.

Umagang Kay Ganda first aired in 2007 as the replacement for Magandang Umaga, Pilipinas, which then had direct connection to the iconic Alas Singko Y Medya.

Over the years, UKG had seen changes in its format and anchoring team. Notable past anchors and hosts include Anthony Taberna, Ariel Ureta, Winnie Cordero, Bernadette Sembrano, Atom Araullo, Zen Hernandez, Kim Atienza, Edu Manzano, Jorge Cariño, Gretchen Ho, and KaladKaren.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the program, along with other news and current affairs shows, was placed on hold for over a month.

It returned to air on May 4, 2020, but soon aired its final episode on free TV the following day, May 5, after ABS-CBN went off the air that same evening.

UKG continued to be seen online, but later stopped the practice after the Current Affairs group was retrenched as a consequence of the loss of the broadcast franchise.

If the show is indeed making its comeback, it will be the first time since 2023 that a live morning program would be produced by the network after Sakto ceased airing in June that year to give way to the relaunch of TeleRadyo to DWPM Radyo 630.

That show, which was anchored by Amy Perez, Jeff Canoy, and Johnson Manabat was also aired on the Kapamilya Channel.

Furthermore, a potential comeback for UKG would also coincide with the recent homecoming of sorts for ABS-CBN on its former flagship frequency channel 2 in Mega Manila through its licensing agreement with Advanced Media Broadcasting System for the Kapamilya Channel on ALLTV2.

Currently, there is still no direct confirmation regarding the possible (or perhaps, already imminent) return of the longest-running morning show of the network.
