After recent comments made by male housemates sparked discussions on social media.
In a statement released through its social media accounts, the Gabriela Women’s Partylist, through its Representative Sarah Elago, voiced their stance on the remarks of some housemates in the ongoing ‘PBB’ season.
In particular, the group was responding to the “green jokes” or comments with sexual connotations made by the cast members of the program.
“The recent exchange on Pinoy Big Brother: Celebrity Collab Edition 2.0 where female housemates called out inappropriate jokes and objectifying remarks highlights a broader cultural issue we continue to face: the normalization of ‘birong bastos’ among young people,” the statement opened.
It continued, “We appreciate how some of the housemates expressed why such comments are hurtful. These conversations, though difficult, are important steps toward building a culture of respect.“
She emphasized that not all jokes are funny, especially if they objectify someone else. “Hindi lahat ng biro ay nakakatawa lalo na kung may nao-objectify. This is a learning moment not only for those inside the house, but for many watching from their own homes and schools.”
In line with this, Gabriela has encouraged the producers of the ABS-CBN and GMA co-produced reality show to conduct gender-sensitivities seminars for all housemates to deepen their understanding of consent, boundaries, and everyday sexism faced by women.
“Moreover, the reality show must also create guided conversations that help young viewers recognize why comments that objectify women are harmful, even when unintended,” the statement furthered.
“Gabriela Women’s Party is open to providing assistance should the producers or the PBB team wish to integrate stronger gender education components into the show.“
Lastly, the group emphasized: “Malaking bagay na makita ng publiko na bawal ang bastos sa bahay ni Kuya.”
Before its statement, many netizens have already expressed their concern on social media over the matter. Some demanded that certain housemates be forcibly removed, while others went as far as reporting the program to the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB).
At present, the show’s management has not issued their official statement on the issue.
