It did not sit well with some spectators at the venue.
At the recent charity gala night and preliminary competition of Miss Grand Philippines 2025 on Sunday, August 17, the 29 candidates graced the stage with their national costumes, swimsuits, and evening gowns, which highlighted their beauty, creativity, and talent.
However, during the evening gown portion of the program, a contender grabbed the attention of people inside the room with her stunt.
Arianne Villareal, who represents Caloocan, appeared in her green gown, which has been designed like a butterfly.
Adding another layer to that, the contestant brought with her a few live butterflies, which she set free in the middle of her walk.
But video clips circulating from the people present at the venue saw some dead butterflies lying around the hall, while those that survived were later spotted atop flowers.
These reels, which were uploaded to social media, attracted criticisms towards the Miss Grand Philippines contestant.
In response, Villareal issued her personal statement on her Facebook account.
She wrote, “Butterflies have always been a symbol of beauty, growth, and new beginnings. Growing up in the Philippines, I would often see butterflies released during weddings and special occasions, a gesture of hope, freedom, and transformation.”
Miss Grand Caloocan then explained that her intention when she proceeded with the act was to “bring that same symbolism of metamorphosis and positivity” and that it came from “a place of creativity and meaning, never with the intention to cause harm.”
“If the moment may have been seen differently by some, I sincerely understand and respect those feelings. Pageantry is about learning, evolving, and celebrating individuality. This experience reminded me that expression can come in many meaningful ways,” the beauty queen furthered.
