On Friday, July 4, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) shared that the government-operated Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2) and Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) have both set up special lanes for students.

According to the agency, the dedicated lanes are available in all 13 LRT-2 and 13 MRT-3 stations, which will enable seamless movement of students availing of 50% fare discounts.

It was last June 20 when the DOTr announced that student discounts for single journey tickets (SJTs) would be increased from the standard 20% to 50% across LRT-2, MRT-3, as well as the privately-operated LRT-1 network.

It will be effective for all students up to post-graduate studies everyday, including weekends and holidays, until the end of the Marcos administration in 2028.

According to Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secrcretary Vince Dizon then, this initiative aims to ease the burden of the learners and their families.

The Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC), which operates the LRT-1 line, will implement queuing systems to manage passenger flow and minimize delays for students availing discounts in due course.
