It will offer a better experience for passengers and tourists.
According to the Department of Transportation (DOTr), the Tuguegarao Airport in Cagayan province in northern Luzon is set to undergo a makeover.
The said regional airport will be renovated and have its capacity expanded from 212 passengers to 743, more than triple than the current one, and is slated to be completed by December 2026.
“Ang utos sa atin ng Pangulong Marcos, Jr. ay dapat i-enhance natin ang regional connectivity sa pamamagitan ng ating mga airports,” noted Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez.
“Kapag maayos at moderno ang mga paliparan, mahihikayat ang mas maraming pasahero at turista na bumisita sa probinsya, na magreresulta sa paglago ng turismo at negosyo,” he adde, emphasizing that the rehabilitasyon of the Tuguegarao Airport boosts the air connectivity in Northern Luzon.
Lopez also inspected the facility during a visit last Thursday, May 21.
Joining Lopez in the said inspection were Transportation Senior Undersecretary Mark Steven Pastor, Undersecretary for Aviation and Airports Jim Sydiongco, Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) Director General Raul Del Rosario at Deputy Director General Danjun Lucas.
Meanwhile, the plan for afditional developments at the airport were also presented to Cagayan Governor Edgar Aglipay and the rest of the provincial local government, with that including the new design for the interior and exterior of the Passenger Terminal Building.
Set to be completed in September 2027, it will add another 150 to the capacity, which will push it to nearly 900 by then.
Lopez has since ordered CAAP to station a mordern fire truck at the airport, in accordance with international standards.
Also part of the rehab works are the airport night-rating, construction of an administration building, and runway expansion works to accommodate bigger planes.
