Magnitude 5.1 quake hits Bogo City, Cebu

On Monday, April 6, Bogo City in Cebu Province was hit by a Magnitude 5.1 earthquake, which is of tectonic origin and had a depth of just 11 kilometers.

The quake, which jolted the city at 3:22 pm, had its tremors felt in various parts of the province, as well as other islands in the Visayas.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), reported intensities were as follows: Intensity V in the City of Bogo and Medellin, Cebu; Intensity IV in Sogod, Cebu, Villaba, Leyte; Intensity III in Bantayan, Liloan, City of Toledo, and Tudela, Cebu; Cebu City; and Mandaue City.

Intensity II in Inabanga, Bohol; Argao and City of Talisay, Cebu; and Intensity I in Badian, and San Fernando, Cebu.

Meanwhile, instrumental intensities were also listed and are the following.

  • Intensity IV – San Francisco, Cebu; Hilongos and Villaba, Leyte
  • Intensity III – Esperanza, Masbate; Liloan, Cebu; Cebu City; Lapu-Lapu City; Abuyog, City of Baybay, Carigara, and Isabel, Leyte; Ormoc City; Hinundayan, Southern Leyte
  • Intensity II – City of Roxas, Capiz; Iloilo City; City of La Carlota, Negros Occidental; Argao, Asturias, City of Carcar, and San Fernando, Cebu; Kawayan and Naval, Biliran; Alangalang, Dulag, and Palo, Leyte; Silago and Sogod, Southern Leyte
  • Intensity I – Aroroy and Cataingan, Masbate; Tapaz, Capiz; Jordan, Guimaras; City of Passi, Iloilo; City of Sipalay, Negros Occidental; Bacolod City; City of Borongan, Eastern Samar; Gandara, Samar

PHIVOLCS also noted that damages and aftershocks are also expected because of the said quake.

Coincidentally, Bogo City was also the epicenter of the powerful Magnitude 6.9 quake that struck on September 30, 2025.
