In a statement on Tuesday, January 27, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) issued show cause orders (SCOs) to four bus companies.

According to Chairperson Vigor Mendoza II, who received guidance from Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Giovanni Lopez, the said issuance was based on the result of the recently-conducted surprise inspections in various bus terminals in Quezon City.

Specifically, the SCOs were issued to Belleza Transport Corporation and Mega Bus Lines Corp which both have a bus terminal in Cubao; Eaglestar Transit Corporation; and, Elavil Phils Tours Inc.

During which, these operators were found to have committed “at least 10 violations of the rules and regulations,” which stipulated in the maintenance of passenger terminals, particularly on the minimum requirements of what bus terminals should be, according to the agency.

Among the common violations found were insufficient roofing to protect passengers from the sun and rain and no decent and separate comfort rooms for male, female and PWDs.

Moreover, there were insufficient security measures that include having CCTVs and baggage inspections; as well as the non-availability of ramps for persons with disability.

The four bus companies were ordered to explain in writing why the Certificate of Public Conveyance (CPC) issued to them to legaly operate public transportation should not be revoked.

The LTFRB also said the first consolidated hearing for the four bus companies will be held on February 11.

This is proof that we are serious when we said that we will run after those that do not comply with the basic standard on what bus terminals and public transportations must be,” said Mendoza.

Prior to that, Mendoza had earlier declared a crackdown against illegal terminals which houses colorum vehicles and poorly-maintained terminals and transport stations to protect the right of the passengers for safe and comfortable commuting experience.

The issuance of the SCO against four bus companies is just the beginning. Filipino commuters should expect daily monitoring and quick action from their LTFRB in the interest of their right for safe and comfortable travel experience,” added the official.

Lastly, the LTFRB chairperson urged bus companies, transport groups, and cooperatives to “shape up” by ensuring that passenger terminals they supervise and maintain are compliant with the rules and regulations of the board.
