Alex Eala ends Miami Open campaign, jumps to 75th place in WTA ranking

On Friday, March 28 (Manila time), Filipina tennis player Alex Eala faced off with world number 4 in the women’s singles chart of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), Jessica Pegula of the United States of America, at the Miami Open.

The Philippines’ pride challenged her third consecutive opponent from the Top 5 of the sport, as she previously bested world number 2 Iga Swiatek of Poland and USA’s Madison Keys, who is world number 5.

By the end of three sets, Eala had to bow out of the competition after her semifinal stint, as the match favored Pegula in Set 1 and Set 3 (7-6 (3) and 6-3), while she took Set 2 with 5-7.

With that, Jessica Pegula is now set to take on world number 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the Miami Open finals.

Despite the loss, Alex Eala remained in jubilant mode, as her fellow Filipinos cheered her on inside the venue.

She also has enough reason to be happy, as she got a considerable jump from being ranked number 140, the 19-year-old Filipina tennis star is now the new world number 75, as per the WTA.

This now makes her the highest-ranked Filipina in tennis, the first to make it to the Top 100, and the first to make it to a WTA 1000 semifinal.

Aside from those feats, she will also be getting over $300,000 or Php 19,000,000 as prize money for her outstanding campaign at the Miami Open.
