Another medal is in the bag for the Philippines.

On Thursday, August 8, the Philippines’ representative Nesthy Petecio returned on the ring for the semifinals match in the 57kg division of women’s boxing in the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Petecio fought against Poland’s Julia Szeremeta in her quest to return to the gold medal match, as she previously did during the Tokyo 2020 games, where the Filipina boxer clinched silver.

During the first round, Nesthy swept the board and scored perfect 10 from all five judges.

However, the course of the match changed after the second round, as four judges scored her Polish opponent the perfect score — which helped close the gap between them.

After the end of round 3, where the boxers exchanged strongly against one another, Szeremeta was declared victor via split decision and will advance to the gold medal match against Chinese Taipei’s Lin Yu Ting.

As for the Filipina boxer Nesthy Petecio, she will be bringing home a bronze medal for this edition of the Olympics.

She is now the first female boxer from the Philippines to bag two Olympic medals in history.

Petecio’s bronze is also medal number 18 for the nation’s haul since 1924, and is also its second in boxing and fourth overall in the current Olympiad.

As of publication, the Philippines ranks 23rd in the medal table with 2 gold and 2 bronze medals — officially surpassing its previous best showing in history during the 2020 Tokyo Olympic games.
