As part of the upcoming changes in the news station.
On Thursday, June 29, 2023, programs, hosts, and staff of ABS-CBN’s TeleRadyo channel bade farewell to their loyal viewers and the station itself. This, as TeleRadyo officially ends its broadcast on Friday, June 30. Programs are expected to make the move to DWPM Radyo 630 (Sais Trenta) on AM radio starting tomorrow.
The farewells began with today’s edition of ‘Sakto’. Its hosts Amy Perez-Castillo, Jeff Canoy, Johnson Manabat, and segment anchors Migs Bustos and Ariel Rojas became emotional towards the end of the program. The atmosphere inside the studio was visibly the same, as staff gathered while special guests BINI performed their song ‘Huwag Muna Tayong Umuwi’. Tyang Amy, during her closing spiels, assured their viewers that ‘Sakto’ will continue to be heard on Radyo Sais Trenta.
That continued to be the trend as ‘TeleRadyo Balita’ and ‘Kabayan’ aired following ‘Sakto’. Kabayang Noli de Castro stated on air that he is still in the dark with regards to what will happen to TeleRadyo come tomorrow, as no one has talked to him yet about the changes.
After Kabayan, tambalang ‘KarTon’ of Karmina Constantino and Tony Velasquez went on air for ‘On The Spot’. The duo also expressed their gratitude to viewers for the trust and support. Velasquez vowed that their mission to provide accurate information will continue. He also reminded viewers to join them on Radyo 630 starting tomorrow. Constantino ended the show by thanking that she became “part of TeleRadyo’s story.”
‘Lingkod Kapamilya’ hosts Bernadette Sembrando and Winnie Cordero also thanked viewers and the show’s staff. “Tuloy-tuloy lamang po ang ating pag-serbisyo,” Sembrano promised to their followers.
It was business-as-usual for noontime newscast ‘Headline Pilipinas’. Anchors Tony Velasquez and Johnson Manabat only made a quick invitation to their listeners and viewers to join them in their “new chapter” on Radyo Sais Trenta at the end of the newscast.
Remaining TeleRadyo shows for the day ‘Tulog Ko, Pasa Mo,’ ‘Pasada sa TeleRadyo,’ and ‘SRO’ all said their respective goodbyes later in the day. Aside from that, the station’s programs since last Saturday have also bade farewell to TeleRadyo.
End of an era
The ‘end’ of programs on TeleRadyo today ushers in a new era for the channel, which traces back its origins to DZAQ-AM in 1953, and later, DZMM 630 from 1986 to 2020. The television counterpart, then-named DZMM TeleRadyo, is the first-of-its-kind in the Philippines and went on air in 2007. In 2018, DZMM TeleRadyo was also expanded to digital television.
Since the denial of the franchise renewal bid of its parent company ABS-CBN in 2020, the former DZMM shows migrated to TeleRadyo and had been airing exclusively on pay television and digital platforms. From June to November 2022, they had a short comeback on free TV via ZOE TV’s digital subchannel.
But in May 2023, ABS-CBN Corporation announced that it is pulling the plug on TeleRadyo, which had been incurring financial losses since the 2020 shutdown of DZMM. The corporation, however, entered into a joint venture with Prime Media Holdings, Inc. to bring news programs to various third-party platforms.
That led to the return of sorts for TeleRadyo’s programming to 630 kHz in Mega Manila. Now branded DWPM Sais Trenta, the radio station will officially return to the airwaves tomorrow, June 30, after three years of dormancy. It is still unknown at the moment how many staff will be affected by the transfer to the “new management.”
Speaking of which, the TeleRadyo TV channel is also moving under the wing of the new management. Beginning June 30, 2023, it will now go by the name ‘Teleradyo Serbisyo,’ and will be branded in the same orange color scheme of DWPM.
Shows that form today’s TeleRadyo, including ‘Kabayan,’ will begin airing on DWPM Radyo Sais Trenta on AM radio starting tomorrow.
