Frontline Tonight brings news back to TV5’s late evening block

A rundown of the day’s top stories before hitting the sack is coming (back) to TV5.

On September 18, 2021, TV5 began teasing for the launch of a new program. Titled Frontline Tonight, the show will begin airing next Monday, September 27 at 10:30pm. Onboard to anchor the said newscast are News5 senior correspondent Ed Lingao and veteran politics reporter Maeanne Los Baños, as confirmed during the September 9 airing of ‘Wag Po!‘ on One PH.

With the upcoming debut of Frontline Tonight, it will become TV5’s latest attempt on the said timeslot. Previously, channel 5 (including its ABC era) produced Big News, Sentro, TEN: The Evening News, Aksyon Journalismo, Pilipinas News, and Aksyon Tonite. Coincidentally, Lingao also served as the lattermost’s main anchor from 2014 until 2018.

In 2019, after the demise of Aksyon Tonite, TV5’s sister channels One News and One PH provided their respective flagship evening newscasts — The Big Story and One Balita Pilipinas — to fill the gap.

However, during the Kapatid network’s sweeping changes in August of last year, they opted to stop airing any news programs at the late-night block. Instead, telenovelas and religious programming, with occasional sporting events, were broadcast for night owls thereafter.

Frontline Tonight is also set to become the third edition of News5’s flagship newscast, alongside Frontline sa Umaga (airing every weekday at 6:00am) and Frontline Pilipinas (weeknights at 5:30pm).

Frontline Tonight will air beginning Monday, September 27, weeknights at 10:30pm, after La Vida Lena, on TV5.
