One of the many casualties of everything that happened.
Last October, Korean broadcaster Mnet announced that the yearly Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) would happen on December 6. One stark difference from the yesteryears is that the event would only be staged in South Korea, for the very first first time in 11 years.
Weeks after the announcement came, no official word about the broadcast of the event in the country was made by any channel or app. But few days leading into MAMA 2020, Mnet posted the list of media partners and streamers of the event in Asia.
Instead of the traditional Myx channel on cable, Smart’s microsite Gigafest took helm of the local broadcast, together with tvN Asia. This development shook some fans, wherein some were still looking forward to see MAMA on Myx.
But with the event still underway (as of press time), former Myx channel head Andre Allan Alvarez has spoken up on the channel’s non-airing of the said awards show.
According to him, the COVID-19 pandemic and the ensuing events after the forced shutdown of ABS-CBN on free TV — the parent company of Myx — caused the channel’s inability to broadcast the affair. Firthermore, he also shared that the music channel was the official Philippine broadcaster of MAMA between 2011 and 2019.
MAMA is still streaming on Smart Gigafest and airing on cable television via tvN Asia.
