Schedule Suggestions: Kapamilya Channel (December 2020)

It’s the mothership’s turn now.

For nearly six months, Kapamilya Channel has been the home of ABS-CBN’s displaced shows caused by the May 5 free TV shutdown. Slowly but surely, new programs and returning titles have also been added to the channel’s lineup.

Until October 9, 2020, it was the exclusive home of ABS-CBN teleseryes, variety shows, and other formats. But as A2Z entered the frame, it’s no longer the case. Weeks later, a 15 minute start time gap was imposed, with Kapamilya Channel airing a certain show at the later time.

In the previous post, it was already explained that the current 15 minute gap must be widened to a full hour. Now, it’s time to take a look at how the Kapamilya Channel’s grid would become if the “+1” system is already in place.

11:30pm – Sunday’s Best

First up, the return of Ipaglaban Mo is inevitable. Although it’s the current heir of Banana Sundae’s previous timeslot, it is at its most comfortable position in the schedule every Saturday afternoon. Also, it could revive competition with Kapuso anthologies Tadhana and Wish Ko Lang.

On Sunday nights, transferring talk shows I Feel U and Ask Angelica from Cinema One and even Showbiz Pa More from Jeepney TV could also be a great addition to the lineup. Apart from helping breathe life to the late-night block, it would also help JTV and C1 focus on their core programming, with archival shows in the former and movies in the latter. For Kapamilya Channel, it would also decrease their relevance on movie blocks.

Weekdays

1:30am – Movie Central Presents
5:30am – Kapamilya Daily Mass
6:00am – Sakto
7:00am – TeleRadyo Balita
8:00am Kabayan

10:30am – Love In Sadness / Game KNB? (new show)
11:00am – Magandang Buhay (simulcast on A2Z)
12:00nn – It’s Showtime (simulcast on A2Z)
2:30pm – I Have A Lover (rerun)
3:30pm – Bagong Umaga
4:15pm – The Good Son
5:00pm – The General’s Daughter
5:45pm – Story of Yanxi Palace
6:30pm – TV Patrol
8:30pm – FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano
9:15pm – Ang Sa Iyo Ay Akin
10:00pm – Walang Hanggang Paalam
10:45pm – Pinoy Big Brother Connect
11:30pm – The World Tonight
12:00mn – Goodbye, Mr. Black

Once Love In Sadness ends its run, transferring the current iteration of Game KNB? from Jeepney TV is also positive move. Firstly, it’s a homecoming of sorts for the gameshow as Kapamilya Channel is the de facto ABS-CBN as of the moment. Secondly, the show’s timeslot on JTV at 12:00 n.n. is in direction competition with the flagship noontime variety program It’s Showtime. Thus, transferring GKNB to pre-Magandang Buhay would also bring a breeze of fresh air for the timeslot that has been heavily infested by repetitive movie blocks.

In the afternoons, it’s evident that I Have Lover has been moved to the post-Showtime slot. The reason here is to accomodate a transition for the “+1” system and let Bagong Umaga air at 2:30p.m. on A2Z and an hour later on Kapamilya Channel.

On primetime, TV Patrol could be reextended to two hours, with the additional 30 minutes being a leeway for A2Z’s broadcast of Ang Probinsyano at 7:30 p.m. Additionally, it would also be a direct competition for the flagship Kapamilya newscast against GMA’s 24 Oras that airs for two hours.

Also, the channel would reduce its overreliance on movie blocks by implementing the “+1” system, with the current 5 movie blocks decreasing to 3.

With ABS-CBN steadily getting back on its feet a few months after it was forced to end broadcast on free TV, a new setup must be introduced for both A2Z and Kapamilya Channel to stop the two platforms from further competing for eyeballs. A good answer to that problem is the “+1” method on selected hours, which is the next best system to a complete simulcasting of KC’s feed on A2Z Channel 11.

The silver lining of the entire situation, however, is that ABS-CBN is still able to continue showcasing its programs thru various platforms even after the shutdown and eventual franchise denial.
