DepEd completes 391 prefabricated school buildings

These disaster resilient building were completed just in a matter of weeks.

According to the Department of Education (DepEd), it has completed the construction of 391 new prefabricated school buildings.

Known as Learning Continuity Spaces (LCS), each modular structure features a flexible layout that can accommodate two to five classrooms—depending on the school’s needs.

It also includes three restrooms, WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) facilities, and provisions for rainwater harvesting.

LCS units are designed for rapid assembly, taking only four to eight weeks to complete.

They comply with safety standards for earthquake-prone areas in the country and are engineered to remain cool and well-ventilated, with ample natural lighting.

These structures, which can be set up in just a few weeks rather than years, are built withstand strong earthquakes and typhoons—able to take on wind speeds of up to 250 km/h.

“Our children shouldn’t have to wait years for a classroom. With these, we can build safe, good classrooms in weeks. This is our answer to President Bongbong Marcos’ call for fast, solid action,” said Education Secretary Sonny Angara in a state en.

The first LCS units were completed in June at Kalawakan Elementary School in Bulacan, Buli Elementary School in Quezon, and Magwawa Integrated School in Davao del Norte.

Other early completions include units in Zambales, Davao de Oro, Bohol, Nueva Ecija,  Pampanga, Pangasinan, Davao Oriental, and Aurora.

A total of 878 LCS units are expected to be constructed under the first two phases of the program, with an 150 units currently under construction.

The rapid construction of LCS units is part of the Department of Education’s (DepEd) strategy to address the shortage of 165,000 classrooms nationwide.

It is in collaboration with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), local government units, and other partners from the public and private sectors.

“Every classroom paid for should be a classroom built, and built well. When the government and our partners work together, we deliver faster,” Angara added.
