With the country’s national tennis association welcoming her, should she decide to join the sophomore edition of the tournament.
In a statement, Philippine Tennis Association (PhilTA) Secretary-General John Rey Tiangco said that as of yet, there is no confirmation from Filipina tennis star Alex Eala regarding her intention to participate at the Philippine Women’s Open (PWO) 2027, which will happen in Manila in January 2027.
He said, “We understand that Alex remains focused on her remaining tournaments this year, and we respect the decisions of Alex and her team regarding her schedule.”
Tiangco, however, noted that while her participation is still not confirmed, they will welcome Eala to join as a “wildcard entry,” subject to the rules and approval of the WTA 125 tournament.
“PHILTA’s priority is to support the growth of Philippine tennis and provide more opportunities for our local players to compete at the international level,” Tiangco added.
For the association, hosting a WTA tournament in Manila is already a significant milestone for Philippine tennis.
“It brings world-class competition closer to Filipino fans and gives our players valuable international exposure,” he pointed out as he expressed the group’s wish for a successful tournament next year.
The PWO was launched earlier this year and is one of the events during the first month of the season, which includes the Australian Open.
This year, Eala was able to participate, but ultimately lost to eventual tournament winner Camila Osorio in the quarterfinals.
