Dropping its long-time on-air moniker.
On Monday, October 5, TV5’s news department News5 released a short video clip online. There, the department’s current logo, which was adopted following the recent updating of the network’s numerical “5” logo in April, is set to be changed anew.
This time around, it would be a bigger change as in the clip, it was seen that the division’s name transitioned from News5 to “TV5 News.”
However, as of this writing, the Kapatid news organization has not yet made any further announcements with regards to this impending makeover—which will be its first in 16 years.
The current TV5 news team traces its roots to the re-established Associated Broadcasting Company (ABC) in 1992. The said station was then born from the ashes of the original ABC-5, which took the airwaves from 1960 until it was forcibly closed down, alongside other media outlets, following the declaration of Martial Law by President Ferdinand Marcos, Sr. in 1972.
Originally, it was known as ABC News and Public Affairs and produced well-known shows such as The Big News, Balitang Balita, and eventually, Sentro, among many others.
Following the channel’s major rebranding in 2008 to become TV5, ABC News was also rebranded as the original iteration of TV5 News and Public Affairs (or TV5 News). Reports were also mostly seen on The Evening News and shows like Pulis Pulis.
After the MediaQuest group acquired the network in 2010, another facelift was given as they became TV5 News and Information under the leadership of Luchi Cruz-Valdes. However, on-air, the Kapatid news team was known simply as News5.
It also aligned them with other offshoots such as the news radio station Radyo5 (now True FM) and the emergency response team Rescue5. In 2013, they also launched News5 Everywhere, further cementing the brand as a pillar of the station.
Despite changes to the network’s programming lineup, logos, and offerings in recent years, the name of the news organization stuck and remained to be in use up to this day.
With this announcement, the TV5 News brand is expected to be rolled out in the coming days.
