Asian Games 2026: Philippines wraps up campaign with 29 medals

On Sunday, October 4, the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan officially wrapped up its two-week-long event with a grand closing ceremony at the Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium.

In the parade of athletes, members of the 447-strong contingent that represented the Philippines throughout the games walked for the final time.

Jeus Yape, who clinched the Philippines’ fourth gold in the multi-sporting event after his winning match in the mixed virtual taekwondo finals event on October 1 (Thursday), served as the finale flagbearer.

Also participating in the said event were another gold medalist, EJ Obiena, as well as silver medalists and taekwondoin Juliana Candelaria, Tachiana Mangin, Kurt Barboza. Carlo Paalam, who also bagged a silver, is also in the closing ceremony.

In this edition, the Philippine Olympic Committee said that the country was able to match its previous records in terms of medals.

The gold, which amounted to four, was equal to the Hangzhou 2023 edition in China. With nine silver medals, meanwhile, this edition equaled the record performance in Bangkok 1970 in Thailand. Not to be discounted are they 16 bronzes. Altogether, the 29 medals were earner across 19 sports.

Another one who clincher gold medals for the country is Olympic (and now, Asiad) double gold medalist Carlos Yulo, who scored his via back-to-back wins in the men’s floor exercise and men’s vault final events.

Meanwhile, at the closing ceremony, the baton was also officially passed to Doha, Qatar, which is set to host the next edition in 2030. Although, there are currently talks to have it moved to 2031 and serve as a continental qualifiers for the 2032 Summer Olympic Games in Brisbane, Australia.
