Showing his might on the international stage once more.
Fresh from his history-making victory at the floor exercise final on Thursday, September 24, Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo returned to the Nagoya General Gymnasium for one more competition.
The “Golden Boy of Philippine Sports,” who won his first-ever gold at the Asiad the day prior, competed in the vault final event on Friday, September 25.
There, he showed off near-flawless exercises. In the first round, he scored 14.733 points (9.133 for execution and 5.6 in difficulty). Meanwhile, in the second, he got a 14.466 score after earning 9.266 points in execution and 5.2 in difficulty.
Through the said event, Carlos was able to clinch his second gold at the Asiad, with Iran’s Mahdi Olfato settling for silver with an average sckre of 14.533 and Hong Kong gymnast Ka Ki Ng getting the bronze with 14.116.
Meanwhile, another Filipino representative in the vault final, Juancho Miguel Besana, landed in fifth after getting 13.783 points.
Later that day, Yulo, a certified Asiad and Olympic double gold medalist, went back to the same venue for the parallel bars final.
However, his golden streak had already ended by that time as he narrowly missed out on a podium finish by being in fourth place with a score of 14.300 points. Zou Jingyuan of China would ultimately get the gold medal with a score of 15.500, while the silver medal was earned by Shinnosuke Oka of Japan 14.500. Rasuljon Abdurakhimov of Uzbekistan clinched bronze with 14.433.
Meanwhile, Yulo’s younger brother, Eldrew Yulo, also competed in a separate final event—the horizontal bars.
There, Eldrew was in a close match with Milad Karimi of Kazakhstan, after they tied with a score of 13.666. However, in the tiebreaker, the Filipino gymnast was able edge out his competition to earn the bronze medal.
