Proving once again that he is indeed the “Golden Boy.”
On Thursday, September 24, the country’s first-and-only double Olympic gold medalist Carlos Yulo competed in the finals event of one of his pet events, the floor exercise—where he scored one of his two golds in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
In the said finals event, held at the Rainbow Hall of Nagoya General Gymnasium, the 26-year-old was the fourth to take the floor and delivered a solid performance that saw him get a 5.7 difficulty score and execution score of 8.966 for a total of 14.666 points overall.
The said routine enabled him to get his first gold medal in the Asian Games, which is also the country’s first in the current edition.
Showing a clip of his performance on his social media page, the certified “Golden Boy of Philippine Sports” expressed his gratitude for being able to score this feat not only for himself, but also the country.
“First GOLD for the Philippines here in Nagoya, and my first GOLD at any Asian Games,” he opened his caption.
Carlos continued, “Ikaw po ‘to lahat LORD GOD! Gabayan at protektahan mo po uli ako bukas at ang mga atletang pilipino. Maging safe lang po kaming lahat ng mga makaka-laro ko at magkaroon po ulit kami ng magandang laban. Thank you LORD!”
Coming close to his smooth performance was Kazakh gymnast Milad Karimi of Kazakhstan who scored 14.600 points to get the silver, while Japan’s Shoma Tsukiyama got a bronze medal after finishing with 14.566 points.
Meanwhile, his younger brother, Karl Eldrew, who also qualified in the floor exercise finals was able to finish modestly in seventh place with a score of 12.233 points.
The elder brother, meanwhile, is looking to earn more gold medals in the Asian Games at the vault and parallel bars finals events on September 25 (Friday).
Prior to this, the Philippines’ men’s gymnastics team ranked sixth in the team qualifications with 232.093 points.
