It has caused unhealthy air quality in a number of cities in the region.

From Monday, August 31, a noticeable haze was monitored in several parts of the Philippines, including Metro Manila.

According to the Environment Management Bureau (EMB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) attributed the smoke and haze to a forest fire in Kalimantan, Indonesia, which has been going on in the past few days.

The prevailing winds, driven mainly by the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat), then brought this to the country.

Since then, the DENR-EMB has been reporting air quality indices for the National Capital Region, Central Luzon, CALABARZON, and MIMAROPA through its network of air quality monitoring stations to assess the extent and potential impacts of the haze.

According to its 5:00 pm report on Tuesday, September 1, it saw “very unhealthy” air quality in Makati City, Commonwealth Avenue area of Quezon City, Navotas City, and Pateros.

Meanwhile, it was “acutely unhealthy” across Las Piñas, Malabon City, Mandaluyong City, City of Manila, Marikina (Parang), Muntinlupa (Filinvest City), Parañaque (Don Bosco), Quezon City (Ateneo), San Juan City, Taguig (TUP), and Valenzuela.

For the safeguard the wellbeing of people, the DENR-EMB remunded the public to “minimize prolonged outdoor activities, particularly in areas visibly affected by haze.”

It also told that lersons who are sensitive to air pollution—including children, older persons, and individuals with respiratory or cardiovascular conditions—are advised to limit outdoor exposure and take necessary precautions.

The public are also advised to wear a well-fitting mask, preferably an N95 or equivalent, when going outdoors in areas with noticeable haze.

Lastly, to stay updated through official advisories and air quality information released by the DENR-EMB and other concerned government agencies.
