He continues his winning streak.
On Thursday, August 6 (Manila time), Filipino pole vaulter EJ Obiena made the country proud once again after his medal-earning performance at the Stabhochsprung Meeting in Jockgrim, Germany.
There, the 30-year-old competed in front of a packed crowd and was able to clear 5.83 meters to win the said contest.
In an Instagram post, he shared, “5.83m for the🥇in front of a packed J-Town 🇩🇪!!!“
He also noted that it was far from being a smooth competition, where he experienced some struggles during warm up and earlier bars. “[B]ut happy to scrape an 80 bar,” the two-time Olympian said.
Nonetheless, “We continue to work and now a few trainings in before we go again 💪“
In the said competition, Obiena did two attempts tp clear the 5.45 meters and only took one each in both the 5.60 meters and 5.70 meters.
Obiena, Qatar’s Seifeldin Abdelsalam, and Turkey’s Ersu Sasma were the three left for the Podium, with both Sasma and Seifeldin clearing 5.77 meters, while the Filipino opted to skip.
Sasma, meanwhile, decided to skip the 5.83 meters. Obiena was able to clear it during his first attempt, while the Abdelsalam took three.
They all would try the higher 5.93 meters, but none would be able to clear it and eventually making the Filipino pole vaulter the winner and was awarded his seventh gold medal this season.
Prior to this, EJ also scored gold medals from previous competitions during both the indoor and outdoor seasons this year.
Last weekend, he took one from the Halberstadter Hohenflug competition in Germany. That followed his prior medals he garnered from Czeslaw Cybulski Memorial in Poland Cottbus, Germany (which he shared with Menno Vloon), the Asian Indoor Championships in Tianjin, China, the ISTAF Indoor contest in Berlin, Germany.
