Marcos hopes Eala’s outstanding performance in tennis will inspire Filipinos to engage in sports

During his fourth State of the Nation Address, President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. made an example out of Filipina tennis star Alex Eala.

In his speech, he noted that the administration’s programs in relation to fitness and health expands just from treating ill people to also cover sports and promote wellness through that.

He told, “Sa nag-uumapaw nating suporta kay Alex Eala, sana ay marami ang ma-engganyo para matuto at maglaro hindi lamang ng tennis, kundi ng iba pang sport.” 

Aside from Eala, she also mentioned the Philippine Women’s Football team in the same line, and added that he looks forward to seeing them in the World Cup in the future.

His point being that sports is important for everyone. Hence, the government has also tripled its support for the sector.

Itinaas natin nang triple ang suporta natin dito. Hindi lamang dahil sa aliw na hatid nito, kundi para sa kalusugan,” Marcos stressed.

Meanwhile, Alex Eala, who is currently World No. 29 according to the Women’s Tennis Association, is currently in Washington, D.C. in the United States for the Mubadala DC Open.

She is set to face Chinese player Zheng Qinwen in the Round of 32, which will mark their first match since the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou.
