The pair did not see a good outcome anew in their reunion.
On Friday, July 3 (Manila time), Filipina tennis star Alex Eala once agaim stepped foot on the grass court at the Wimbledon Championships in the United Kingdom for her women’s doubles match, where she paired up with Czech player Nikola Bartunkova.
It is reunion for the two, who have previously competed as a pair in the Birmingham Open last June, where they lost to Harriet Dart and Maia Lumsden early in the competition.
Coincidentally, they would also be the last two women standing in the singles, with Alex bagging the trophy.
At the Wimbledon, they aimed to capitalize on their familiarity with each other as they faced the tandem of Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia and Sofia Kenin from the United States.
In their match, Eala and Bartunkova had an early momentum in the first set, but that was broken by Ostapenko and Kenin in the succeeding set and pushed the match to a deciding third set.
The Filipina and Czech duo looked to regain their footing in the last set, but was overwhelmed by the Latvian-American partnership, which ultimately won the match, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.
While this marked the end of her Wimbledon doubles journey, Alex is still in the women’s singles after she was able to head straight to the third round after winning against Australian Maya Joint.
The 21-year-old, who is currently world no. 32, is set to face Iga Swiatek next in the third round scheduled for Saturday, July 4.
