The pieces were stunning, to say the least.
As the Nation’s Girl Group BINI made their historic debut at the Coachella Music Festival on Saturday (April 11), they also made sure to not only highlight their music and artistry.
The eight-member team also took it as an opportunity to wear pieces from Filipino designers.
Such as is the case for Job Dacon, who created the set of golden costumes worn by the group in their showcase.
In a thread on X (formerly Twitter), Dacon shared the process of making the attires that were proudly sported by Aiah, Colet, Maloi, Gwen, Stacey, Mikha, Jhoanna, and Sheena.
He wrote, “The cat is out of the bag! We present the [BINI]’s coachella fits!
The costume designer then shared that his team made use of real gold leaf sheets which they mixed with recycled plastic for each member.
“Fun fact: did you know that we used about 20-25 sheets of REAL gold leaf and about two pounds of recycled plastic per person? Ingenuity and sustainablity finally meets the international stage!“
He noted that it was also a collaborative effort with the base constructed of beige denim by Marian Zara.
Furthermore, “The filigree is mainly based on calado carvings found in Filipino heritage houses. The team also made custom seashell molds from the endemic Bantayan Island scallop.”
Dacon also revealed that one of the most time-consuming elements during the production process was the melting of recycled plastic to the custom molds and gilding it one by one.
The group mounted their set on the Mojave stage of the festival, which is also where the likes of Ed Sheeran, Carly Rae Jepsen, Djo, Lizzo, Lola Young, Willow, and many others have performed in the past.
During the 45-minute program, they pumped up the crowd with their singles Shagidi, Zero Pressure, Out Of My Head in the opening part of their showcase.
After a quick ment, the team delivered a strong four-song segment that included their songs Karera, Salamin, Salamin, Blink Twice, and Cherry On Top.
Lastly, they brought to Coachella their newly-released song Blush, as well as Bikini, and the song that started the road to national and global recognition for them, Pantropiko.
