Last February 19 and 20, the Technical Working Group (TWG) for the National Sports Coaching Certification Program (NSCCP), led by the Philippine Sports Institute (PSI), met at the PhilSports Complex in Pasig City.
As the lead technical arm for coaching education under the PSC, the institute through the TWG brought together key institutional partners, including the National Academy of Sports (NAS) and the Department of Education (DepEd).
The main agenda was to ensure the alignment of school-based and grassroots coaching programs with the standards set under the NSCCP framework, according to the commission.
A key topic discussed during the session is the structured alignment of NSCCP Levels 1 and 2 with the National Certification (NC) I and II competency standards of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA).
According to the PSC, this alignment aims to ensure that entry- and foundation-level coaching certifications are competency-based, quality-assured, and positioned within the Philippine Qualifications Framework.
Ultimately, that will strengthen the credibility and portability of coaching credentials nationwide.
“At the same time, the NSCCP framework continues to be benchmarked against the standards of the International Council for Coaching Excellence (ICCE), ensuring alignment with internationally recognized coaching competencies, ethical principles, and coach development pathways,” it added.
Furthermore, the session focused on harmonizing curriculum structures, clarifying competency standards, and strengthening quality assurance systems across institutions instead of simply revising isolated curricula—with the TWG aiming to reinforce a unified governance and certification structure under the NSCCP.
The PSC noted that this marks the first in a series of technical workshops aimed at institutionalizing a coherent, standards-based coaching pathway that will be set to follow multiple benchmarks nationally and globally—all to “systematically strengthen grassroots and long-term athlete development.“
“By reinforcing governance, competency alignment, and international benchmarking within the NSCCP framework, PSI and its partners continue to build a stronger, more credible foundation for Philippine sport,” furthered the PSC in its public statement.
