The award-winning movie is now available on the platform.
On Tuesday, December 30, the 2024 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) entry The Kingdom was added to the content library of streaming giant Netflix.
Starring Vic Sotto and Piolo Pascual, the film dwells on an alternate timeline, where the Philippines was never conquered by any foreign invader and continued to be ruled by a king under a constitutional monarchy called Kalayaan.
Its story starts with King Makisig (Vic Sotto) having to balance his roles as the leader of the land and as head of his family, especially with the wedding of his youngest daughter, Dayang Lualhati (Sue Ramirez) nears.
But on the wedding day itself, a major problem happened as the princess was forcibly taken by unknown forces—only to be saved later on by Sulo, a part of the group of banished individuals.
The story will then take many twists and turns as Sulo tries all his might to bring back Lualhati to the palace.
Other members of the cast include Cristine Reyes, Sid Lucero, Ruby Ruiz, Zion Cruz, Nico Antonio, and Art Acuña. Iza Calazado and Cedrick Juan also appear in special roles.
The Kingdom won 2nd Best Picture and the Gatpuno Antonio J. Villegas Cultural Award at the 50th Metro Manila Film Festival. Its director, Mike Tuviera, also won in the Best Director category.
In 2026, the show will have a spin-off sequel series entitled The Kingdom: Magkabilang Mundo on TV5, with Pascual, Ramirez, and Reyes expected to reprise their roles, with Derek Ramsay and Ryza Cenon joining the cast.
