Students will no longer be required to queue to get their discounts.
On Tuesday, September 2, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced that the personalized Beep cards for students will become available om September 15, 2025.
These white-colored Beep cards, currently used by senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PWDs), will see the 50% discount automatically deducted to students’ fares on LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3.
Effectively, the new measure will improve travel times of the commuting public using the train system, as it will also remove the need for students to line up at the ticketing booths to have their discount manually validated.
The personalized Beep cards are valid for one year, with the name of the student imprinted, while the option to renew also open every school year. Additionally, the printing of cards will also be expedited to same day processing, in contrast to the current 5 to 7-day period.
“Pupunta lang sila sa kahit anong station next month, ipapakita ang ID at ipi-print ang beep card right then and there. Ire-renew lang nila ‘yan every after school year,” explained former Transport chief and now Public Works Sec. Vince Dizon in August.
Aside from these new student Beep cards, the DOTr has also partnered with financial institutions to install cashless and QR turnstiles, which are only currently available at MRT-3, to quicken the entry and exit of passengers at stations.
