Powerful quake jolts Myanmar, tremors felt in neighboring countries Thailand, China

On Friday, March 28, a Magnitude 7.7 quake rocked central Myanmar, near the town of Sagaing at 1:20 pm (local time), according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

Although, in its bulletin, the Thailand Meteorological Agency said that they have measured the quake’s magnitude to be 8.2 on the Richter’s Scale.

12 minutes after that, the USGS recorded a strong aftershock, which reached Magnitude 6.4.

As of writing, limited information about damages and casualties are coming out from the quake’s epicenter in Myanmar, which is in the midst of a civil war.

Meanwhile, the tremors were able to reach neighbors, especially its bordering countries of Thailand and China.

In the Thai capital city of Bangkok, several districts have gone on a standstill following the events this afternoon.

According to live pictures provided by local TV network Amarin Television, a long-stretching traffic jam has clogged the streets of the city, while workers and students have also been dismissed.

Also going viral now on social media are clips of the collapse of a high-rise building that was under construction near the popular Chatuchak Market and Bang Sue Railway stations in the northern part of Bangkok.

As per Thai authorities, 50 people were inside the building when the quake occurred, and reported that 43 are trapped, while 7 are injured.

Other skyscrapers in the city have also been affected, with water from pools atop hotels and condominium towers spilling during the earthquake.

Videos taken at the Bangkok Train System, commonly known as the BTS, saw the violent shaking of the trains that have stood still near the platform.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, who is in the popular beach destination of Phuket for a meeting, has since ordered an emergency briefing.
