Marilou Diaz-Abaya’s award-winning movie ‘Jose Rizal’ heads to Netflix

The multi-awarded 1998 film ‘Jose Rizal’ of National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts, Marilou Diaz-Abaya, will have a major re-release before the end of the year.

This, as the remastered version of the movie will be heading to streaming platform Netflix, which had already listed it in the ‘Coming Soon’ tab of its ‘New and Hot’ section.

According to the video streamer, ‘Jose Rizal’ will he available to view from December 30, in commemoration of Rizal Day.

Starring Cesar Montano as the titular National Hero, it follows the life and plight of Dr. Jose Rizal as he fought for the freedom of the Philippines from the Spanish colonizers, which led to his execution at Bagumbayan (now Luneta) in 1896.

The movie was originally released as an entry to the 1998 Metro Manila Film Festival, where it was able to clinch almost all awards, including the coveted Best Picture, during the said edition.

Earlier this year, during the MMFF Sinesigla Sa Singkwenta special film festival celebrating the 50 years of the long-running annual event, GMA Pictures released the remastered and restored version of the highly-acclaimed movie.
