The Philippine showbiz icon passed away today.
Multi-awarded actress Jaclyn Jose, also known by her real name Mary Jane Guck, has died at the age of 60 on Sunday, March 3, 2024.
At the moment, the family has not disclosed the cause of the veteran actress’ death.
Jaclyn Jose made her acting debut 1984 via the film ‘Chicas,’ which was directed by William Pascual.
She went on to star in movies directed by the likes of Lino Brocka (White Slavery) and Chito Roño (Private Show), and earned her first Gawad Urian nomination for the former.
In the ’90s, she transitioned to television and starred as Ester Lagrimas in the family drama ‘Familia Zaragoza’ on ABS-CBN.
She also played the iconic role of Magdalena Trinidad in the top-rated teleserye ‘Mula sa Puso,’ before portraying characters in other dramas, including ‘Sana’y Wala Nang Wakas,’ ‘Hiram,’ ‘Prinsesa ng Banyera,’ ‘Mundo Mo’y Akin,’ and ‘Marimar (2015),’ to name a few.
In 2016, she was awarded the prestigious Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival for her lead role in Brillante Mendoza’s ‘Ma’ Rosa,’ where she played the titular character Rosa — a drug dealer in the slums.
Her win is an historic one, as she is the first Filipino and Southeast Asian actress to bag the award in the said category.
Back at home, in recent years, she has appeared in multiple television and movie projects, led by 2018 Metro Manila Film Festival comedy blockbuster ‘Fantastica,’ independent movie ‘Kalel, 15,’ GMA drama series ‘The World Between Us,’ and ‘Bolera’.
In 2023, she reunited with Coco Martin through the ongoing ABS-CBN primetime action drama ‘FPJ’s Batang Quiapo,’ where she was casted in the role of BGen. Dolores Espinas.
The said project also marked her homecoming to the Kapamilya network after a decade of doing TV shows with GMA.
Trendrod expresses its deepest sympathies to the bereaved loved ones, friends, and colleagues of the late Jaclyn Jose.
